Aurora Cockatoo — Behind the Design
There’s a special kind of magic in everyday moments, and Aurora Cockatoo was born from one of mine. For years, when I drove my bus, I had a little audience of cockatoos who thought they owned the road. They’d strut across in front of me, fluff their crests, flap their wings, and carry on with the most dramatic antics you’ve ever seen. I’d sit there laughing, waiting for them to finish whatever performance they were putting on that day.
Those cheeky, noisy, full‑of‑personality birds became part of my routine. And somewhere in all those mornings, Aurora started forming in my mind — a cockatoo with all that attitude, but softened into my delicate lineart style and wrapped in the swirling aurora colours I love so much.
Aurora isn’t just a bird. She’s a moment. She’s a memory. She’s a little piece of joy from a time when the world felt loud and silly and alive.
Designing her felt like stitching a story — every swirl, every feather, every curve shaped by those cockatoos who refused to let me pass until they were done being fabulous.
Now she’s part of Needles & Nonsense, and I love that she carries a bit of my real life with her. A reminder that inspiration doesn’t always come from grand ideas… sometimes it comes from a flock of cockatoos causing chaos in front of your bus.
